On leaving King’s, he joined the 74th (Highland) Foot regiment of the British Army as a junior officer. This regiment was actively involved in suppressing the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and Arthur received a medal for his actions during the campaign. He was considered a protégé of Lord Frederick Fitz Clarence and General Yorke. His sale of commission was up in 1861, and he moved to New Zealand.
