Basil Westby was a student in the Military Department at King’s in 1856-57. He went on to serve with the 16th Foot (Bedfordshire Regiment). He became Ensign in 1858, Lieutenant in 1862, and Captain in 1867. In 1871, he took temporary retirement on half pay, before he was appointed Major in 1879 and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1881. He retired as Honorary Major-General in 1887.
