Charles Doyne Anderson Straker was born in India. His mother was born in South Africa and had married an officer in the East India Company Army. When Charles was 16, he moved to London to study Military Science at King’s. He then returned to India to join the Madras Artillery and rose through the ranks over the following 25 years, finally retiring in 1884 as a lieutenant colonel.
