A surgeon and a physician, Clarke was the son of surgeon and the brother of a well-respected obstetrician. Born in 1782, Clarke had completed all of his medical training by 1827, and served as an assistant surgeon in the Hertford Militia for two years, before, on his brother’s persuasion, specialising in midwifery and in women’s and children’s diseases. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law from Oxford in 1845, as well as an Honorary MA from Cambridge in 1842. He was Royal Physician to Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV. As a result, he was created a baronet. He was also surgeon to Queen Charlotte’s Lying-In Hospital until about 1821. He married Mary Anna Squire, and they had five children.
