Edmund Staveley was born into a gentry family in London. He was sent to school in Nottinghamshire before studying Military Science at King’s. On leaving KCL, he joined the Royal Artillery as a junior officer. His first posting was to India, where he took part in the suppression of the 1857 Indian Rebellion and received a medal for his role in the British capture of Lucknow. After the Rebellion he remained in the Artillery, serving in South Africa and Malta.
