Born in 1837, Bannister was a student in the Military Department in 1853-54. He subsequently entered the Bombay Staff Corps and 1st Admin Division Essex Rifle Volunteers. He became Cadet in 1854-55, Lieutenant in 1864, Captain in 1868, and Major in 1874.
