Pennant inhereted land in North Wales and Jamaica from his uncle, Richard Pennant, 1st Baron Penrhyn. The family ran a quarrying business in Wales, likely funded by capital gained from their role in the slave trade. Pennant was awarded over £14,682 for his ownership of plantations in Clarndeon, Jamaica, between 1817 and 1834, whereby 764 individuals were enslaved.
