He entered the House of Lords in 1770, then thirteen years later entered the Privy Council under the government of the Duke of Portland who also appointed him as Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. In 1812 he was made Lord Steward of the Household in the Tory government of Spencer Perceval and kept this position until 1821. In 1819 he was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Guelphic Order and in 1822 a Knight of the Garter in 1822. From 1770-83 he was Lord-Liutenant of Cheshire and Vice-Admiral from 1770-1827. In 1776 he began an affair with Grace Darymple Elliot, a Scottish courtesan and spy during the French Revolution, this prompted a divorce from her husband formalising their separation. He later married Lady Georgiana Charlotte Bertie on the 25th of April in 1791.
