Born in Westminster, London, the seventh son of Benjamin Bathurst of Lydney Park (1688-1767) and third of fourteen children of his father’s second wife. His father had 36 children from two marriages. Ordained in 1769 and received the see of Norwich in 1805 after Charles Manner-Sutton was made Archbishop of Canterbury. He and his wife Grace married on the 15th of August, 1780, and had eleven children. As a member of the House of Lords Bathurst supported Catholic emancipation and the 1832 Reform Act unlike many of his fellow clergy.
