Bathurst was born in 1762, and died in 1834. He was MP for Sirencester for thirty years before ennoblement, and was a close personal friend of William Pitt the Younger, as well as Wellington. He was also a member of the Privy Council, and Master of the Mint, and spent much of the Napoleonic war trying to broker deals across Parliamentary and Cabinet factions. Bathurst’s official position caused his name to be mentioned frequently during the agitation for the abolition of slavery, and with regard to this traffic, he seems to have been animated by a humane spirit. He had seven children by his wife, Lady Georgiana Lennox.
