Son of Colonel James Coleridge, nephew of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Hart Coleridge, Henry was born in 1789. He was well educated, and in 1825 he accompanied William Hart Coleridge on his posting to Barbados. In 1826, he anonymously published ‘Six Months in the West Indies in 1825’, in which he wrote in depth on on emancipation of slaves, which he enumerated at 800,000. In 1826 he was called to the bar, and in 1829 he married his first cousin, Sara Coleridge, daughter of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, with whom he had five children. He wrote a few more books, and became Coleridge’s literary executor on the death of the latter in 1834. From this point, he focused on editing and publishing his uncle’s work.
