A British peer and army officer. He was MP for County Durham in 1812-15, for Winchelsea in 1816-18, for Tregony in 1818-26, for Totnes in 1826-30, Saltash in 1830-31, and finally for South Shropshire in 1832-42. He had also joined the British Army in 1815 and rose through the ranks in the 75th Regiment of Foot, eventually becoming a General in 1863. He inherited the Dukedom of Cleveland from his father in 1842.
