Born in 1750, Milner was a mathematician and natural philosopher. From 1782 to 1792, he was the first Jacksonian Professor of Natural Philosophy at Cambridge. Maintained his Anglican faith throughout his career and was largely responsible for the evangelical revival at Cambridge. He was also responsible for the conversion of William Wilberforce. In 1791, Milner became the Dean of Carlise, and in 1793 he was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, a position he had wanted for decades.
