J Des Barres was born to Augustus Wallott/Walter/Wallet, a Judge in the Supreme Court, and Isabella Des Barres, a parish birth register; parents married in West Or Old Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland on 11th June 1833. He attended King’s College London between 1852 to 54, and served in the Royal Horse Artillery from National Army Lists. In India RHA served in Indian Mutiny, Crimean War, Peninsular War, Anglo-Zulu War and the Boer War. He ranked as Lieutenant 1st July 1861, Captain 25th November 1874, Major 21st December 1881, honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel 6th September 1884 upon retirement. He worked as a Magistrate in Mageela House, Curryglass, Tallow, Ireland from the 1892 County Directory.
