Born on 12 December 1784, Monk was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and was elected Regius Professor of Greek in January 1809. He was appointed Dean of Peterborough in 1822 and Bishop of Gloucester in 1830 (Gloucester was amalgamated with Bristol in 1836).
