Born in 1839, Berkeley was a student in the Military Department from 1855 to 1857. He went on to enter the 48 Madras Native Industry and Madras Staff Corps. He became Ensign in 1858, Lieutenant in 1861, Captain in 1868, Major in 1874, Brevet in 1881, Colonel in 1887, and finally reached Major-General in 1893. Berkeley was awarded the medal of CIE (Companion of the Indian Empire).
