John Bond, born 1778, was Lancaster merchant and Mayor. He inherited his wealth from his family who owned several plantations, mainly from his uncle Thomas Bond who owned Broom Hall in British Guiana, multiple plantations in Grenada, as well as co-owned Plantation Albion in British Guiana including houses, machinery, enslaved people and crops. Work by Ann Ranshaw has shown that his route to ownership in British Guiana was by inheritance, especially since John himself has likely never left England.
