Born in 1779 to the Baron Brownlow and his wife, John was highly educated and went to Russia and Germany in his tour. He was the MP for Clitheroe for 5 years, and then succeeded his father’s titles and estates in 1807. He was appointed the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire between 1809 and 1852. In 1810, John married his first wife, Sophia Hume, with whom he had three children. Sophia died in 1814. In 1815 he was created both the Earl Brownlow and the Viscount Alford. In 1818, he married his second wife, Caroline Fludyer, with whom he had a further four children. Caroline died in 1824. In 1828, he married his third and final wife, Emma Sophia Edgcumbe, with whom he had no children. When he died in 1853, his estates and title went to his grandson, as his son had died in 1851.
John was the executor for his little brother’s mother-in-law’s estate, and as such was awarded compensation of over £10,000 for an estate in British Guiana.
