John Pelly Atkins donated money to King’s College London alongside his father, Alderman John Atkins. He was a West India merchant, and made at least four claims with the Slave Compensation Act with his father. Only one of these claims was successful. John Pelly was also a promoter of pneumatic railways and held the position of sheriff of Kent. His wife, Anna Pelly (née Children) was a notable botanist and photographic artist, and inherited his estate upon his death.
