Batt was baptised at St Martin’s in the Fields on 13/03/1746. In his adult life, he served as a barrister and auditer of Irish accounts. He was the executor of Edward Gibbon and of William Markham, Archbishop of Canterbury, and his friends included Horace Walpole and Mary Berry. His wife, Susan Batt (née Neave), was awarded compensation for the Galway Estate on Monserrat, which she inherited from her father, James Neave of Nunton. Batt donated toward the establishment of King’s College London. He died in 1831, leaving £120,000.
