Born in Essex in 1837, Bowness was a student in the Military Department from 1853 to 1855. He served in the 89th Foot, 86th Foot, and 7th Foot (as Paymaster). He became Ensign in 1855, Lieutenant in 1859, Captain in 1864 (by purchase). Bowness retired in 1866 and became Paymaster in 1867, before resigning in 1878. He died in 1886.
