Born in Middlesex in 1834, Barras was a student in the Military Department from 1852 to 1853. He served in the 15th Regiment Native Infantry and Bombay Staff Corps. He became Lieutenant in 1855, Captain in 1862, Major in 1874, and Colonel in 1882. Barras was based in India and published ‘India and Tiger-Hunting’ in 1883. He died in 1894.
