His father was a major colonial landowner in Florida in the 1760’s and as compensation for the loss of the American plantations, Rolle was due to inherit plantations in Barbados. The title Baron Rolle of Stevenstone was revived and conferred onto him in 1796. He was very conservative and held a deep-seated distaste for Charles James Fox and Henry Dundas. In 1788 he was made colonel of the South Devon militia, recorder of Torrington in 1797 and colonel of the Royal Devon yeomanry in 1801. He was one of the twenty-two lords staunchly against Catholic emancipation. Upon his death his estate was worth £300,000 and because both of his marriages were childless his wealth and titles were given to a nephew though his second marriage.
