Born in Gibraltar in 1777 to American-born Major Arthur Browne of the 58th Foot, who served during the Siege of Gibraltar, Marmaduke joined the Honourable East India Company Army (HEIC), and became a Colonel in the Bengal Artillery. In 1806, posted in Calcutta, he married Maria Bellet Browne, an artist who painted several miniatures of some of the leading figures in British India. They had three children together. Marmaduke died at the age of 56 in 1833 in Buckinghamshire, England.
