Born in 1756 in London, Hamilton was an Anglo-Irish politician. He entered Pembroke College, Cambrige, in 1773 and became friends with William Pitt the younger. He entered Parliament as Tory MP for East Looe in 1783. He succeeded his childless uncle as Earl of Abercorn in 1789 and entered the House of Lords. He was subsequently appointed 1st Marquess of Abercorn. He was sworn into the Privy Council of Ireland in 1794, as most of the Abercorn lands were in Ireland, and he tried to build a significant voting bloc in the Irish Parliament but with little success. He became a Knight of the Garter in 1805. Hamilton died in 1818 aged 61.
