Born in 1793 as Harriet Fane, she was a diarist and political hostess for the Tory Party. Married Charles Arbuthnot, a Tory MP, in 1814. During the 1820s, she maintained a close friendship with the Duke of Wellington, who twice served as Prime Minister in 1828-30 and 1834. Her detailed and extensive diaries were published in 1950 as ‘The Journal of Mrs Arbuthnot’.
