French military general and statesman who played a key role in the French Revolution and led a series of military campaigns across Europe during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars from 1796 to 1815. He was the First Consul of the French Republic from 1799 to 1804, then became Emperor of the French from 1804 to 1814 (and briefly again in 1815). He was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he died of cancer in 1821. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest military commanders in history.
