Born in 1766, Bexley was a lawyer and politician who was ultimately known for being one of the longest-serving Chancellors of the Exchequer, from 1812 to 1822. He became Chancellor of the Exchequer at a time where the country had a huge amount of debt and heavy taxation, and in trying to fix the economy Bexley became extremely unpopular. He voted for Catholic Emancipation, and was also one of the vice-presidents of the American Colonization Society, whose aim was to repatriate African freedmen in the United States to the African continent. He and his wife, Catherine Isabella Eden, had no children.
