King of the United Kingdom and Hanover from 1820 until his death in 1830. He had previously acted as prince regent for his father, King George III, since 1811 due to his father’s mental illness. George IV lived an extravagant lifestyle and his reign was marked by various scandals. He patronised new forms of leisure and style, commissioning the remodelling of Buckingham Palace and the rebuilding of Windsor Castle, but his decadent lifestyle and poor relationship with his wife was unpopular with the public. During most of his reign, Lord Liverpool was the Prime Minister. George was forced to accept Catholic emancipation in 1829, despite opposing it, after Liverpool retired. George died in 1830 aged 67.
