A Scottish Anglican priest and educationalist who pioneered the ‘Madras System’ of education after spending time in India. This system saw older children teach younger ones in order to overcome teacher shortages. This approach was adopted across the British Empire. Bell was subsequently appointed Prebendary of Westminster in 1810 and Master of Sherburn Hospital in 1809. He died in 1832, leaving a large sum of money to educational causes.
