An Anglican priest and poet. Born in 1767, Richards matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford, in 1775 and became a scholar of the college in 1786. He became a priest in 1790 and was elected to a fellowship at Oriel College, where he remained until 1796. He was subsequently appointed Bampton Lecturer at Oxford in 1800, and then select preacher in 1804 and 1811. In 1824, he became the vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields in Westminster and built a new vicarage. He also contributed to the building of St Michael in Burleigh Street, off the Strand, and served as the treasurer of Charing Cross Hospital. Richards died in Russell Square in 1837.
