Born in Cambridge in 1789, Clay was apprenticed to Richard Watts, then University Printer John Smith at the Pitt Press, before setting up his own printing business. He worked for the ‘Illustrated Times’ printing large single-sheet wood-engravings issued as supplements, as well as the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, the Religious Tract Society, the House of Richard Clay & Co. Ltd, and Messrs. Clay & Sons, Limited.
