Robert Bennett

Born in 1833 in Cork, Bennett was a student in the Military Department at King’s in 1850-51. He was the son of Jane Hallaran and Robert Bennett, who was the Recorder (Chief Magistrate) of Cork. After leaving King’s, Robert Bennett served in the 63rd Foot, 13th Defence Batallion, 46th Foot, 27th Regimental District, and Depot Batallion. He became Ensign in 1851 (by purchase), Lieutenant in 1854 (without purchase), Adjutant in 1854, Captain in 1854 (with purchase, which was subsequently cancelled), Major in 1868, and retired at Major-General (Hon) in 1887. He died one year later, in July 1888.
