Roger Swire was born in Manfield, Yorkshire, and studied Military Science for two years at King’s. He then joined the 17th (Leicestershire) Foot as a junior officer. After a brief period of service in Gibraltar, his regiment was deployed on active service in the Crimean War. Roger took part in the siege of Sebastopol and the battle of Great Redan, where he was ‘wounded dangerously’. He was awarded a medal but never fully recovered and retired on half pay.
