Smauel Smith, born 1754, was a banker and Tory member of government. He is said to have been a ‘staunch friend’ of the abolition, which affected his political popularity in Leicester. To overcome this, he had to deny any support towards Catholic relief, as well assist in the creation of a group of new freemen to secure re-election.
