Born in 1839 in Bengal, Barr was a student in the Military Department at King’s in 1855-56. His father, also called William, was an officer in the Bengal Army in India. Barr the younger married Elizabeth Rose in 1862. After leaving King’s, Barr served in the 53rd Foot, 48th Foot, and 15th Foot (2nd Batallion) Pay Department, before rising to Honorary Rank of Lt. Col as Staff Paymaster in 1889, and then Col [retd]. He served in India and Afghanistan and was awarded campaign medals for his service. Barr died on 20 May 1961.
