Previous Princes of Wales appeared to age out of the role of Prince Hal to become Falstaffian figures. However, a 1944 screening of Laurence Olivier’s film Henry V in the Waterloo Chamber implied that George VI was a military leader in the Shakespearean mould.

The film was created as propaganda, to raise morale during World War II. This private royal screening (long before the film could be seen in cinemas outside capital cities) invited its audience to recognise both Olivier and George VI as proxies for Shakespeare's war hero.
