AGE-C Webtool User Guide
The AGE-C Dataset Webtool offers three ways to explore the project dataset, depending on your needs:
- Overview – View broad patterns and visual insights across the entire dataset.
- Search – Check whether a specific film or person is included; best for quick lookups.
- Filters – Combine multiple filters for in-depth exploration.
1. Overview
This section helps you visualise general patterns across the dataset and answer questions such as:
- How many films and people are included in the dataset?
- How many films related to ageing/presenting ageing actors or subjects were released per year?
- What is the most recurring genre?
How to use
Use the three filter boxes at the top of the section:
- Main category (e.g., Genre, Production country, Role, Release year, Awards)
- Group by (compare sub-groups, e.g., Gender, Country)
- Chart type (Bar, Pie, Line, etc.)
- Hover over charts to see exact values.
- Charts update dynamically and reflect the full dataset unless filters are applied.
- Adjust the number of results displayed in the chart using the “Max categories to plot” slider.
- Use the “Chart height” slider to adjust the chart’s height for easier reading.
- Expand to show data used to plot chart.
2. Search
Use Search to check whether a specific film or person is included in the dataset, for example:
Is actress Isabelle Huppert in the dataset?
Does filmmaker Pedro AlmodĂłvar appear in the dataset?
Is the film I, Daniel Blake included?
How to use
- Enter at least three characters (film title, person name, or keyword) in the search box.
- Select what you want to search in: Full text, Titles, or Names.
- Click Search or press Enter to display results.
- Click Reset to clear the search.
3. Filters
Use Filters to explore specific groups of films or people using multiple criteria. You can combine several filters across the dataset for deeper exploration. Although multiple filters can be selected at once, searches using a maximum of five filters yield the best results.
How to use
- Read the Glossary before starting.
- Click Reset to clear all active filters.
- Ensure the Search field is empty.
- Expand the Filters panel to set your search.
- At the top, choose the filter logic:
- Match all (AND logic)
- Match any (OR logic)
- Select one or more filters by checking the filter boxes.
- The visualisations update automatically to reflect your current filter selections.
- Use the search box inside each filter category to quickly find terms.
Important: How Tags Work
- All tags can be selected individually.
- If you click on a upper-level tag such as Health in later life, your results will include all films tagged with it, its first-level subtags (Care, End of life, Health), and their second-level subtags.
- If you are interested in a specific topic, such as Dementia, click directly on Dementia. This narrows your results to only films explicitly tagged with that subcategory.
- Once you have selected your filters, they will appear beneath Filters. They can be removed individually or all at once.
