Founded in 1826 to create a London equivalent to the Parisien Jardin des Plantes, the ZSL aimed to house a zoological collection “which should interest and amuse the public”. In 1829, the Zoological Gardens opened, quickly gaining their more common appellation ‘London Zoo’. In 1931, they also opened Whipsnade Zoo. In addition to running both of these zoos, and having a scientific research branch known as the Institute of Zoology, ZSL is known as a charity and organisation devoted to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats.
