Queen of the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901. Her reign was longer than any of her predecessors and was named the Victorian era, a period characterised by scientific and industrial development, and political and social change. Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. She inherited the throne aged 18. Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, her first cousin, in 1840. Their nine children married prominent and royal families across Europe, giving Victoria the nickname ‘grandmother of Europe’. She died aged 81 in the Isle of Wight and was succeeded by her son, Edward VII.
