Wilson’s paternal grandfather was bishop of Bristol while his maternal grandfather was dean of York. He along with his brother were orphaned in 1786, it is unknown who cared for them. His brother died in 1801 leaving Wilson to inherit his grandfather’s estate at High Melton Hall in 1802. He was in 1807 elected high sheriff for Yorkshire and in the 1826 general election was voted M.P for the Tory party. In 1817 he gave the Leeds General Infirmary land valued at £1500. He was against the catholic emancipation.
