Apparatus criticus

  • Text of ILTermini checked against photograph and commentary;
  • 1: Given that Bivona reports a letter of Salinas of 1879 which read the initial [-]V, it is unclear why that should not be reported in the text; it remains entirely uncertain whether the missing initial letter should be O or A. Note that two verticals appear close together for the second I of the initial name, but whether this signifies II, E, or even IL is unclear (and all editions simply print I).

Date

The text is suggested by Bivona and Manganaro to be fourth or fifth century on the basis of the orthography (e.g. 'queralla'), but such a late date for a funerary formula of this sort seems relatively unlikely and a date in the third century should not be excluded. (AD 201 - AD 500)
