commentary

This inscription together with a second, ISic000065, both erected by Marcus Valerius Vitalis, honours the emperors Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius, who shared imperial power from 161 to 169 CE. They also attest to the presence of a curator rei publicae, an imperial official appointed by Rome to oversee local administration. Cities generally enjoyed a high degree of autonomy, and the reasons for this external supervision are unclear, though they may have been linked to financial difficulties.
