Apparatus criticus

  • Text from autopsy ;
  • line.2: There is no immediately clear answer as to what the sign "Ↄ", a reverse C, symbolises here; cf.ISic000146 and ISic000174; also CIL 6.15139 (Rome) for analogous use, as pointed out by Bivona (1994). Understanding Ↄ as signifying 'circiter' is one attractive interpretation.

commentary

The husband of the deceased, Auctus, is known only by his cognomen. It is probable that Auctus is the same individual as identified ISic000161 and ISic000164, all found at the same time and in the same location, from which we can discern his name: L. Cornelius Auctus. Corneliae are common in Thermae Himeraeae, although the cognomen Scepsis is unknown in Sicily
