Apparatus criticus

  • Text of Mommsen in CIL ;
  • Bivona states that interpunct only visible after Lucia in line 1, but Mommsen records them throughout on the basis of autopsy and it is apparent that they are faintly visible in the photograph but lacking in paint (which may be modern?)

Provenance

Place of origin
Thermae Himeraeae
Provenance found
First recorded by Romano 1829, among those found subsequent to Torremuzza 1784; seen by Mommsen also.

Current location

Although photographed in the museum in the 20th century, Bivona could not find it and we have been unable to do so either in a systematic study of the depositi in 2022-2023.

Date

Earlier Roman Imperial (AD 1 – AD 200)
Evidence
lettering

Text type

funerary

commentary

It seems highly likely that the stone is broken on the right and the deceased's second name is missing in line 1, and the verb 'est' in line 2 (which would then render the text approximately symmetrical).
