commentary

As emphasised by Bivona (1994), the funerary formula ('mortua annorum') is unique for Thermae Himeraeae, and indeed Sicily generally. Bivona (1994) suggests that Euplea was probably a freedwoman, having been a public slave. A variation of the name Euplea appears in Thermae Himeraeae, namely Euplia, ISic000174, as well as the masculine Euplus elsewhere in Sicily, see ISic003233. The names Publicia and Publicius appear elsewhere in Thermae Himeraeae, see ISic000059 and ISic000211, as well as in a variety of other places across Sicily.
