Description
Large rectalinear plaque in yellow stone. Abrasion on left side, but all sides intact. Discolouration around the text, presumably from something placed atop the stone. The rear is flat. Traces on modern paint and mortar on sides and splatter of paint on front.

Four lines of Latin text. Lines 1, 3 and 4 are roughly on the same alignment, but line 2 starts significantly further to the left than the others. The use of small and compact hederae on line 4 – the leftmost hedera is a little less clear than that on the right.

commentary

The cognomen, Herma, of Greek origin, is extremely common. By contrast, the gens Tennius is unique, although it is similar to the otherwise attested Stennius, Vettennius, Maetennius (etc).
