First recorded in Taormina in 1756 in a letter of Ignazio Cartella (writing from Taormina, reporting three fragmentary inscriptions that he has acquired). Seen by Dessau in a courtyard of the Hotel Bellevue (later Metropole) shortly before 1883, and not seen since.
