Provenance

Place of origin
Catina
Provenance found
Orsi records that it was found in an unspecified location in the vicinity of Acireale, which Manganaro suggests to indicate ancient Acium/Akis, located in the vicinity of Capo Mulini south of Acrieale. However, the piece was already recorded by Ferrara in 1829, as being in the collection of barone Recupero, having been found some years before during the construction of the 'chiesa dei minoriti', in Catania.

Date

Orsi attributed it to the Norman period, Ferrua (1989) suggested the Saracen period due to the name Taric, and Manganaro suggests Gothic, each lowering the date therefore, which seems to belong in late antiquity, perhaps later 6th century CE, or earlier 7th century CE, dated by indiction (14th).
