Apparatus criticus

  • Text from autopsy;
  • 1: It is obviously impossible to know the inflected form of Caesar
  • 2: The letter is either I, or N, or L; given the position at the end of the slab, I or N seems more likely than L

Physical description

Support

Description
Large fragment of a cyrstalline white marble, intact along the upper edge, broken left and below, and upper right corner. Note that the right edge is a very clean edge, suggesting that this is the end of the slab in question, with a further slab adjoining. Finished on the reverse; the upper rear edge is chipped.

Syracusae
Provenance found
Schubring in his autopsy notes of 1865 (no.144) states that the piece was found in the area of the great altar of Hieron; Mommsen in CIL states that it was found by Serradifaclo among the ruins of the great altar (but does not reference the source for this claim).

commentary

It would be tempting to associate the fragment, which seems likely to be part of a monumental imperial building inscription, with the early Imperial creation of a porticoed square in front of the great altar.
